Interactions:

Carbamazepine

  • Adverse Effect: Increased risperidone clearance  
  • Clinical Management: Monitor therapeutic efficacy of risperidone following the addition of carbamazepine; higher risperidone doses may be needed.

    Clozapine

  • Adverse Effect: Decreased risperidone clearance  
  • Clinical Management: Monitor patients for increased adverse effects of risperidone when these drugs are given concurrently.

    Levodopa

  • Adverse Effect: loss of levodopa efficacy .Clinical Management: Concurrent use of risperidone in patients with parkinsonism should be avoided. If concurrent use cannot be avoided, monitor the patient for signs of increasing extrapyramidal effects. .

    Lithium

  • Adverse Effect: weakness, dyskinesias, increased extrapyramidal symptoms, encephalopathy, and brain damage   Clinical Management: Monitor patients closely for any signs of toxicity or extrapyramidal symptoms, especially if high doses of antipsychotic drugs and lithium are used.

    Tramadol

  • Adverse Effect: an increased risk of seizures  
  • Clinical Management: Caution should be used if tramadol is to be administered to patients receiving neuroleptic therapy. If possible, avoid this combination
